ARTHUR CHAPLIN
1869-1935
Flowers in a Vase with Bird's Nest on a Marble Pedestal
Date: 1903
Framed Size: 42 inches by 35.5 inches

Arthur Chaplin, the son of renowned French genre painter Charles Chaplin (1825-1891), was born in Jouy-en-Josas (Seine-et-Oise) in 1869.  He studied with Leon-Joseph-Florentin Bonnat (1834-1923) and Camille Bernier (1823-1903) and after a trip to Holland in 1898, settled in Paris, dedicating himself to the painting of flowers.  Chaplin began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1899, receiving an honorable mention in 1903 and a third class medal in 1904, and at the Royal Academy in 1905. This example of Chaplin's work is a highly complicated composition demanding the technical skills of only the finest artists. It has been scrupulously observed and painted with a subtle mastery of colour and character in the delineation of the flowers.  The attention to detail is meticulous, painted in strong and rich colours with careful attention to perspective.

MARCEL DYF
(1899 – 1985)

Summer Bouquet
Size:   Height  32  inches  Width  27 3/4  inches (framed)

Marcel Dyf, whose real name was Marcel Dreyfus, was born in Paris on October 7, 1899.  While he showed a talent for art at an early age, he began his adult life as an engineer, but by the age of 23 he became a professional artist.  Dyf’s influence and inspiration came from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists; among his favorite was Pierre A. Renoir.  Dyf set up a studio in Arles in 1922 and began his career as a landscape artist – painting views of the surrounding countryside.  His work began to attract attention from collectors and dealers and it was not long before he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artists Francais, Salon d’Autumn and Salon des Tulleries.  By 1935 Dyf had returned to Paris and during World War II he joined the Resistance and was based in Correze.  By 1950 he had set up a studio in Cannes and a few years later met a young girl by the name of Claudine.  Claudine was 19 at the time, some 36 years younger than Marcel, and in 1965 after posing for him for many years the two married.  They spent many years together, traveling the world in search of subject matter and each summer they would spend time in their home in Brittany.  Among his most successful exhibitions were those at the famous Petrides Gallery in Paris in 1949, 1951, and 1953.  He was greatly honored in 1950 by being asked to exhibit in the National Display Gallery at the Carnegie Institute.

It is for his vibrant flower paintings that Dyf is best remembered.  These Impressionist flower paintings capture the very essence of true Impressionism – vivacious colour, texture and great depth – all combined in a master’s touch.  This is a beautiful example of his work which is presented in pristine condition.  This painting was exhibited at Frost & Reed, London, Exhibition label Verso.  Museums:  Smith College Museum of Art, Northhampton, MA; Musee Ariaten

WLADIMIR DE TERLIKOWSKI
1873-1951

Bouquet De Fleur
Date: 1948

Wladimir De Terlikowski was born April 24, 1873 near Warsaw in Poraj, Poland. The artist traveled extensively through France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Northern Africa. Several solo exhibitions were held between 1900 and 1930 throughout Paris, Rome, Warsaw and the United States.  The artist settled in Montparnasse, one of the most important locales in the history of early 20th century art. In this Parisian district he was a contemporary of many artists destined to become towering figures -- Modigliani, Soutine, Picasso, Vlaminick and Derain who lived, worked, and socialized in its garrets and cafes.  Terlikowski was a part of this milieu.   In the years preceding and following the First World War, Terlikowski’s lusciously painted canvases were widely exhibited in the ateliers and galleries of Europe.  His paintings were admired for their vivid, impressionistic portrayals of the places, people, even the fruits and flowers of his world.  His unusual use of the palette Knife, rather than the brush, made his ability to capture subtle effects of light, shade, and form all the more remarkable and has been compared to the work of Cezanne and Renoir.

Terlikowski was a member of the Murols School of artists whose main inspirations were drawn from Victor Charreton and Leon Boudal. The school was named after the village in Auvergne and was active from 1910-1925.  Throughout the course of his travels he attended Academy de Monaco and, upon arriving in Paris, studied under Jean-Pierre Laurens.  It was at the 1912 Salon d’Automne that Terlikowski met his first patron and was offered a one man show at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. The show opened April 21, 1913 after which Vuillard and Bonnard both had shows in the following months of the same year at the gallery. Critics wrote of the exhibition describing the artist as “the Polish Master”. Later the same year the Musée National du Luxembourg in Paris purchased a canvas by Terlikowski titled Entrance to Besse-en-Chadesse, Auvergne.

Examples of his work may be seen in various museums, including those located in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseilles, Paris and Rome.  His paintings are among others in the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.  In 1918 he was awarded the French Legion of Honor and in 1933 he was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor.  Bennard Perlmann published Terlikowski’s biography Wladimir de Terlikowski; His Life and Work in 1998.

ANTOINE VOLLON
1833-1900
Still Life with Fruit
Date: circa 1870
Framed Size: 36 inches by 44 inches

This important master of still-life painting is best remembered for his sumptuous paintings of fruit, addressed very much in the Dutch manner.  He also painted landscapes and genre scenes of which his peasant studies are beautiful presentations of one whole phase of French life and show the influence of the Barbizon School at that time and he was also a celebrated etcher. He was born in Lyon on the 23d of April 1833 and died in Paris on 27th April 1900.  He received his formal art training at the École des Beaux-Arts, Lyon under Danguin and in Paris under Hippolyte Flandrin.  Having completed his studies, he exhibited in Paris at the Salon. On viewing this superb example of his work, the sumptuous display of fruit, fare and vessels are portrayed with true technical ability and also with an awareness to the prevailing tone which becomes gradually darker, under an obvious Rembrandt influence. This excellent example of his work is presented in pristine condition and in its original ornate period frame.

ACHILLE LAUGE
1861 - 1944
Bouquet des Fleurs
Date: 1913
Framed Size:  31.5 inches by 33 inches

Admired by connoisseurs and collectors alike, Achille Lauge was born in Arzens, France in 1861.  He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris with two illustrious masters Alexandre Cabanel (1824-1889) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). After having completed his studies, Lauge exhibited at the Paris Salon and at the Salon des Independants, where many of his flower studies were displayed. The influence of Georges Seurat can be clearly seen in Lauge's early work.  Beginning in 1888, Lauge began composing his paintings with small points of colour, although he never entirely accepted Serurat's scientific technique, choosing instead to concentrate on the primacy of colour rather than the divisionist approach.  By the end of the 19th century, he abandoned the dabs and dots and painted thin, methodical brush strokes that resembled crosshatching.  Lauge applied his pigments more liberally, with enlarged strokes and thick impasto, resulting in paintings sparkling with colour and light. In Bouquet des Fleurs, this high-keyed and brilliantly patterned composition, Lauge's technique is at its best.  A colourist's painting, the form is indicated by clearly defined boundaries against contrasting hues.  While the flowers remain the focal point of the picture, the emphasis is subtle, depending on colour harmonies and tonal balance to draw the eye to it through the various rhythms.
