Considered one of New England’s most important landscape painters, John Joseph Enneking was born in Minster, Ohio in 1841. He studied with landscape artist Samuel Lancaster Gerry (1813-1891) in Boston and having completed these studies, he was given a letter of introduction to the great art master Leon Joseph Bonnat (1833-1922). In 1872, Enneking left for Europe with his family to study and paint. Returning to Boston in 1876, Enneking influenced imbuing Impressionism into American art of that period. He set up a studio next to renowned American Impressionist and founding member of the Ten, Childe Hassam (1859-1935) and Boston landscapist George Fuller (1822-1884). He quickly gained recognition as a pre-eminent Impressionist.
