EUGENE GALIEN-LALOUE

1854-1941

Title:   “Vue de l’Ancien Trocadéro depuis les quais du Louvre”

Date:   Circa 1890

Size:    Height 16 ½”              Width 23”      (framed)

Considered one of the finest and most distinguished French painters, Eugene Galien-Laloue excelled in painting serene and beautiful landscapes, and was equally well known for his Parisian street scenes.  He was born in Paris in 1854 and studied with his father Charles Laloue who was a landscape artist. Galien-Laloue was trained as an architect but found no joy in this profession and so embarked on his artistic career.  He trained as an engraver and achieved a considerable reputation as a graphic artist. Exhibition records show that he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1877 usually with views of Normandy, the Seine and Parisian street scenes.  His landscapes have a serene and jewel-like quality about them and his style although free in technique is completely assured.  His appreciation of light and tonal value along with his ability to portray the atmosphere of the French countryside so beautifully has rendered his work a place among the finest collections.

This superb example of his work is presented in pristine condition and is further enhanced by its ornate period frame.

JULIAN GUSTAVE GAGLIARDINI

1846 - 1927
Title:    “Twilight in Provence”
Date:   circa 1890
Size:    Height  23 inches        Width   26 ¼ inches    (framed)

This important Impressionist artist was born in Mulhouse on the 1st March 1846 and died in Paris in 1927.  He studied with illustrious masters including Soulary and Leon Cogniet.  He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1869 to 1880 where he received numerous awards.  It is interesting to note that when he first exhibited at the Paris Salon it was his historical genre paintings for which he was to receive much recognition.  He later abandoned these genre subjects concentrating on landscapes for which great acclaim would soon follow.  Such was the quality of these paintings that numerous honours were to follow including: an Honourable mention in 1883, third class medal in 1884, second class medal in 1886, silver medal at the Universelle Exposition in 1889, the prestigious Chevalier la Legion d’honneur in 1893, gold medal at the Universelle Exposition in 1900, and a member of the Society of French Artists from 1883.

Gagliardini was acknowledged by both connoisseurs and collectors alike for his wonderful renditions of the French coastline and landscape.  As with Claude Monet and Turner, the magic and difficulty of capturing reflections and effects on water were to captivate him for many years – often embarking on abstraction where reality dissolves into the beauty of mystery.  As shown in this fine example of his work, his technique is now firmly established in impressionism.  He has dispensed with the darker hues and lightened his palette now creating glorious intricacies of colour. Summer afternoons are depicted with amazing depth and beauty of colour, capturing the viewer and drawing them into his world.  This superb example of his work is presented in pristine condition and in its original period frame.

Museums were his work may be seen include: Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, Montpellier, Mulhouse, Paris (Louvre), Tourcoing, Rochefort.

Boudin was an artist of the open-air and marine atmosphere, and he illuminated a very distinct phase of Impressionist development.  This painter par excellence depicted breezy skies and choppy waters at the mouth of the Seine, harbors and jetties off the Normandy coast, animated seaside resorts, and the coming and going of Channel and fishing boats.  Examples of Boudin's work may be seen in the following museums:  Alencon; Alger; Dieppe; Honfleur; Le Harve; Nantes; Louvre; Reims; Stockholm National Museum; Metropolitan Museum, New York; State Hermitage Museum, Russia; Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, Scotland; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the National Gallery in London.

Trouville, Les Jetes a Maree Haute is a wonderful example of his work, depicting the jetties at Trouville, a thriving fishing port by the mid nineteenth century. Boudin painted Trouville from many different viewpoints. Here he portrays the more tranquil aspects of port life, elevating the grey tones into a dynamic atmosphere above the ships coming and going from the sea.  This superb example of his work is presented in pristine condition and in its original period frame.  It is included in the catalogue raisonne on his work no. 2373.

GEORGES STEIN

Born in 1870
"Les Parisiennes"
Date:   circa 1900

Framed Size:    Height  32  inches  Width  27 inches

Georges Stein's wonderful drawings of Paris at the turn of this century are justly admired  for portraying the very essence of Parisian life.  Stein was born in Paris in 1870 and on completion of his studies he exhibited at the Paris Salon and in London where his busy street scenes were avidly sought.  Many one-man exhibitions of his work were held in London and Paris and although he worked in both oil and pastel, it is for his watercolours that he is best remembered.  He did illustrations for many of the journals of the period catching fleeting moments on the Boulevard Saint Denis, l'Arc de Triomphe, Les  Grands Boulevards, etc.  As with Luigi Loir and Eugene Galien-Laloue, Georges Stein painted views of Paris in a manner which carefully and intimately observed the subject matter with a directness of execution which depicted both the freshness of atmosphere and the magic of colour and light.

This present composition is quintessential Stein - a lively Paris evening street scene with the Paris Opera House, a flower vendor, allowing one to catch a glimpse of elegant Parisiennes - a view which has captured the imagination of many through the decades.

Les Parisiennes
Date: circa 1910
Framed Size: 31.25 inches by 35.25 inches

Clarence Montfort Gihon painted many memorable paintings of Parisian life at the turn of this century.  He was born in Philadelphia on the 25th  November 1871 and received his formal art training in the United States.  When he was 23 years of age he travelled to France to further his studies. Among his most notable art masters were William Merritt Chase(1849-1916), Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) and Benjamin Constant(1845-1902) at the Academie Julian. Having completed his studies, he exhibited at the Paris Salon. He was also a noted illustrator and designed many wonderful sets for the theater.   Gihon fell in love with France, especially Paris, where he was to spend the next 35 years of his life before returning to the United States.  He is represented in numerous collections both in France and the United States.  There is a personal kind of Impressionism in this superlative vision of everyday life.  No picture could be less topographical and yet, by the empathy of his genius, Gihon set the spectator down in Paris in a way that leaves no doubt as to where he is, and at the same time creating lovely intricacies of colour.  Gihon delighted in “the people’s Paris."  In this charming painting, he conveys the very essence of Parisian life at the turn of the century, capturing the elegance of a wealthy society, beautiful ladies, shopkeepers, etc.  The precision of drawing has gone to be replaced by a shimmering envelope of colour and yet attention to detail is not lost, but conveyed in an Impressionist manner.  This is a truly lovely example which epitomizes the best of Gihon’s work.
