EMMA HERLAND
1856-1949
Sur La Place A Concarneau
Date: circa 1880
Framed Size: 54 inches by 62 inches

Best remembered for her wonderful renditions of the fisher folk of Concarneau along the Brittany coast, Emma Herland was born in Cherbourg on the 16th of February 1856.  She received her formal art training at the Ecole Francais from such masters as Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant and other painters of the plein-air school.  Having completed her studies, she exhibited at the Salon from 1879 and also at the Society of French Artists from 1886.  Herland was awarded an Honourable Mention in 1901.  Examples of her work are exhibited at Le Musee de Saint-Brieuc. Upon observation, Sur La Place a Concarneau is painted in a fresh and spontaneous moment, achieved only by the most accomplished of artists.  Sunlight floods through the market square, demonstrating the artist’s interest on the effects of light and colour.  Herland pays great attention to detail, while simultaneously implementing free brush technique, superb in its breath of handling and brilliant colour.  Besides being delightful in itself, this painting is a wonderful insight into a time long past, and it was exhibited at the Paris Salon.

POMPEO MASSANI

Massani’s vast knowledge of figure painting is demonstrated in A Great Vintage, by the excellency of his figures.   In this painting, each man is positioned exactly for the job that he is doing.  This painting is busy, and splendid in composition, draughtsmanship and understanding.   This beautiful example of Massani’s work is presented in pristine condition, in its original period frame and is signed  P. ALFRED CHARLES WEBER

1862-1922

Title:   “Kittens at Play”

Date:   Circa 1890

Size:    Height 18 1/2”           Width  21 1/4” (framed)

Alfred Charles Weber was a much admired animal and genre painter.  Clearly schooled to the highest standards in drawing available to scholars of the Belle Époque period, Weber subscribes to the figurative tradition and produced a considerable body of work predominantly in oil with the occasional watercolour.  Not only did he paint wonderful animal paintings, but he was also highly regarded as a painter of cardinals.  As with his contemporaries Brunery, Landini, Vibert and Marias-Milton, Weber achieved recognition with his highly finished interiors often depicting the Lords of the Catholic Church at unexpected pursuits, these became highly fashionable with the collecting cognoscenti generally and with the Americans in particular. A large number of his works found their way to America at this period and are still very much sought after today.

As with other artists specializing in cat subjects, including Henrietta Ronner, Julius Adam, Lucie Briard and Jules Leroy - all were painters of pets par excellence, international in their appeal and conveying all the charm of one of our favourite domestic pets.

This beautiful painting exemplifies the absolute best in cat portraiture - great care and technical accomplishment is evident not only in the anatomy of the kittens, but there is also sensitivity throughout.  This work is presented in pristine condition and in its original ornate period frame.

The art gallery in La Harve, Holland holds a work entitled ‘Portrait of my Brother’.

ELIZABETH STRONG
Born 1855
Title:     “Precious Moments”
Date:    1887
Size:     Height  61 ½  inches     Width  46 ¼  inches

This noted American artist was born in Westport, CT on Feb. 1, 1855. The Strong family lived in Hawaii until 1858 when they settled in Oakland, CA. Elizabeth began her art studies in San Francisco at the School of Design under Virgil Williams and, during her two years there, won gold and silver medals for her work. In 1879 she sketched on the Monterey Peninsula while sharing a home with her brother Joseph. Through the sales of her pictures of pets of wealthy patrons she was able to save enough money for a lengthy stay in Paris. During the next eight years there she had further study with animal painter Emil van Marcke. Returning to the U.S., she studied at the ASL of NYC under Wm M. Chase (1892-93) and then returned to Paris where she lived until 1905. While there, she ran a small school of her own and exhibited often at the prestigious Paris Salon. From Paris, she returned to California and lived in Berkeley until 1920. After settling on the Monterey Peninsula, she was active in the local art scene until her death in Carmel on Oct. 30, 1941. Since she specialized in paintings of animals (especially dogs), she was sometimes called “the Rosa Bonheur of America.”

On viewing this painting, one is aware of how exquisitely Elizabeth Strong painted with scrupulous detail, while portraying her subject matter in a sensitive and truthful manner.   It epitomizes all the great qualities of a true master.  One can feel the warmth and loveliness of the young girl sleeping and the joy the artist must have felt in capturing that special moment.

FREDERICK BACON BARWELL
Fl 1855-1897
Flitting
Date: 1866
Framed Size: 42 inches by 55 inches

Frederick Bacon Barwell was an important English artist who specialized in genre and domestic scenes.  He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was much influenced by his friend Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1836).  The two often worked together in Barwell’s studio, and interestingly, Millais completed some of his most important paintings while working together.  After having completed his studies, Barwell exhibited widely in London and the provinces, including: the Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Society of British Artists with titles: “The London Gazette” 1855; “Adopting a Child” 1857; “A Perplexing Letter” 1874. Frederick Barwell was greatly admired by both his contemporaries and critics alike, including John Ruskin, perhaps the most discerning of all, who described his work as “expressive and well considered.”  Flitting is a superb example of his work, both in execution and subject matter.  It tells the story of an English family “flitting” with all their family goods and pets.  Painted with accuracy and enormous detail, it epitomizes the very best of Barwell’s work.
