SOLD ARTHUR WARDLE 1864-1949 More, Please Date: 1890 Framed Size: 23.5 inches by 27.5 inches
Acknowledged as one of the foremost animal painters spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries, Arthur Wardle achieved early success, exhibiting his first painting at the Royal Academy at age sixteen where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1938 showing 113 works. Throughout his career, he painted almost every breed of dog. He did not individualize his dogs, but rather emphasized breed expression and standards. Rather than painting pet portraits, Wardle preferred to paint show dogs or sporting dogs involved in canine activities or in landscapes. Representing the best of Arthur Wardle's work, this painting of West Highland terriers is presented in pristine condition in its original period frame.
